Auto a vapor

La fabricación / The making

Auto a vapor

Steam Car

Sporadic attempts by various companies to produce steam-automobiles in England, France and America during the last decades of the 19th Century were hampered by laws prohibiting or limiting their use on roads and paths. By 1890 these obstacles, particularly strict in England, became more flexible, and many steam automobile factories appeared.

In the United States, many companies joined the industry, including the Milwaukee Automobile Company, who provided its model Runabout, also called Stanhope in two versions: Standard and Top. This reproduction shows the last one, with its characteristic holding roof.

The vehicle differred from others at the rear axle, since it was connected to the motor by a roller chain, and a steam preassure regulator (the model includes it even if it does not actually work),. A piston, driven by the steam preassure, regulates the flow of fuel to the burners, controlling the flame when it burns. A manually operated pump and a reservoir of compressed air drive the gasoline to the burners, after going through the boiler for gasification.
